Purpose and objectives

Water4Resilience builds on the results of the Vinnova project Unity4Water and takes the next step from technology development to implementation. The project aims to develop and demonstrate circular systems where treated wastewater is reused locally for irrigation, green vegetation and food production. The aim is to integrate water treatment, nutrient recycling and digital monitoring into practical solutions that can be used in real-life environments, such as wastewater treatment plants, schools, hotels and other buildings. The project will show how wastewater can become a resource instead of a waste and contribute to more resilient and resource-efficient water management.

Expected impacts and results

The project is expected to contribute to a transition from linear water management to circular systems where water and nutrients are reused. Results include demonstrations of safe water reuse systems, new methods for monitoring water quality, and knowledge on environmental impacts, economics and social acceptability. In the longer term, the solutions can reduce pressure on freshwater resources, return nutrients to food production and contribute to more sustainable and resilient urban water and food systems.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is carried out in collaboration between universities, research institutes, municipalities, water companies, businesses and civil society actors. The work includes real-world testing, development and adaptation of technologies for water treatment, nutrient recycling and digital monitoring, and installation of demonstration systems at end-user sites.
