About the project

Water Management in Crisis and War (WMCW) aims to strengthen Sweden’s ability to secure water supplies in the event of long-term and serious crises. Experience from the war in Ukraine, for example, shows how vulnerable society becomes when water resources are threatened or destroyed. They also show how important it is to have alternative systems, backup solutions and good preparedness.

The work builds on a previous pre-project within Water Wise Societies, which was used to gather relevant actors for the Transition Lab. The need owners for ViKK are the Swedish National Food Agency and VAKA, the national water disaster group that provides support in acute crises in the drinking water supply.

What ViKK contributes

ViKK will contribute to:

  • technological innovations
  • alternative strategies
  • new forms of collaboration between stakeholders

Partner organizations will work together as much as possible and then take turns to drive concrete actions across organizational boundaries. The focus is on implementing many smaller steps that together lead to a larger transition.

Stress test of the water supply

Within ViKK, stress tests will be carried out, simulating complex crisis scenarios where several events occur simultaneously and put pressure on the water supply system. The aim is to test both technical solutions and cooperation between actors. Through this, hidden weaknesses can be detected and addressed.

The goal

ViKK will strengthen Sweden’s ability to manage water safely – both in everyday life and in a crisis.

What’s new in the project

The first three development journeys of the project are about:

  • hidden and forgotten water resources
  • definition of technical water
  • dimensioning of water supply for crisis and war.

The first stress test will be conducted in November.
