This call aims to achieve a national, coherent and decision-relevant system for water budgets and water accounting in Sweden. The aim is to improve the knowledge of water availability, water quality and actual water use in surface water and groundwater, including abstraction, recharge and net consumption, at the river basin level.

Granted projects will work closely with the Water Wise Societies Program Office and will play a key role in fulfilling the program’s mission. Two projects will be funded.

Although Sweden generally has good hydrological information on precipitation, runoff and water storage, there is currently no integrated national approach to quantify how much water of what quality is actually withdrawn, returned and consumed across different sectors, geographical areas and seasons. This call aims to achieve a national, coherent and decision-relevant system for water budgets and water accounting in Sweden by developing a national method and platform for water balances in Sweden.

Projects funded under this call will include four components: 1) the development of a methodology platform; 2) data infrastructure, IT and security; 3) governance, roles and responsibilities; and 4) risks, costs and consequences of action and inaction.
