Purpose and objectives

The project aims to increase the understanding and acceptance of standardization as a tool for sustainable, efficient and digitally enabled asset management in the water and wastewater sector. By using an international standard (ISO 81346), we want to contribute to the sector having a common “language” for structuring, naming and sharing information about water and wastewater facilities – something that is crucial to enable, for example, digital twins, smart analyzes and more sustainable decisions.

The aim is to strengthen the sector’s ability to manage assets in a coordinated and data-driven way, through concrete examples, co-creative activities and knowledge-enhancing materials. The project will also contribute to long-term collaboration and national harmonization by highlighting benefits, overcoming resistance and disseminating lessons learned to the whole of VA-Sweden.

Expected impacts and results

The project is expected to lead to a better understanding of the benefits of standardized asset management at both strategic and operational levels. It contributes to a change in working practices, increased digital maturity and the ability to make insight-based decisions – resulting in better data quality and reduced duplication.

The project addresses a key obstacle to the transformation of the water and wastewater sector: organizational and behavioral resistance to change. Through methods such as future workshops, storytelling and trust mapping, we create commitment, trust and participation at all levels – from operations to management.

Contribution to the mission of Water Wise Societies: The project promotes resilient water supply, wise water use and reduced leakage by providing water and sanitation organizations with tools to understand, manage and share information about their assets. It creates the conditions for effective, coordinated and sustainable water management across society – in line with the vision “Sustainable Water for All 2050”.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is implemented in five integrated work packages with a focus on co-creation and learning. Through 4-6 workshops, methods such as future workshop, trust mapping and service design are used to create dialogue and insights within VA organizations. The results are documented, packaged and adapted for different target groups. Knowledge-enhancing material is disseminated via seminars, industry meetings and digital channels. The project ends with an open seminar and wide dissemination of results.
