About the Project

Water Management in Crisis and War (ViKK) aims to strengthen Sweden’s ability to secure its water supply during long-term and extensive crises. Experiences from, among others, the war in Ukraine demonstrate how vulnerable society becomes when water resources are threatened or interrupted, and how crucial alternative systems, backup solutions, and increased preparedness are.

ViKK builds on a WWS pre-project that was used to initiate the mobilization of relevant stakeholders for the transition lab. Needs owners in ViKK include the Swedish Food Agency/VAKA, which is the national water disaster group tasked with providing support during an acute crisis in drinking water supply.

ViKK contributes to a combination of, among other things, technical innovations, alternative strategies, new forms of collaboration, etc. The partner group will work jointly as far as possible, and then alternate concrete efforts across organizational boundaries in developmental journeys. The focus will be on continuously creating several minor shifts to achieve an overall transition.

Furthermore, stress tests will be conducted. Through the stress test, we will simulate complex crisis scenarios where several events occur simultaneously and put pressure on the water supply system. By staging these situations, both technical systems and collaboration between the stakeholders are tested, and hidden weaknesses can be identified.

ViKK will strengthen Sweden’s capacity for secure water management that functions both in everyday life and during a crisis.
