In this project, the participating organizations the Rural Economy and Agricultural Society of Halland, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, the Geological Survey of Sweden, and Sydvatten AB combine their scientific and practical expertise to develop site-adapted policy instruments for wetlands as nature-based solutions (NbS) to increase raw water availability, quality, and risk reduction. The work is based on experience from more than ten rewetting projects in southern Sweden, with a particular focus on Sydvatten´s main water source in Bolmen and the test bed wetland in Plönninge. Through knowledge co-production with landowners, municipalities, regions, governmental agencies, banks, and insurance companies, the project develops indicators, observation-based decision support, and valuation frameworks to clarify benefits, costs, and risks. Furthermore, the project develops concrete, context-specific solutions and instruments that can be implemented in several sectors of society. The close collaboration with multiple stakeholders enables scalable policy instruments and strengthen the possibilities for upscaling and long-term use of NbS wetlands for improved raw water quality and availability in southern Sweden.

The text on this page was written by the project team.
