About the project
The Swedish water and wastewater sector is facing major challenges such as climate change, ageing infrastructure and increased environmental requirements. Digitization and data are keys to transformation, but today development is hampered by data silos, vendor lock-in, lack of standards and limited ability to share and use data. The Swedish Water Data Lab (SVADA) is establishing a national transformation lab for data-driven system transformation with a focus on a common, interoperable and EU-aligned data space for water and wastewater data. A data space serves as a structure for secure and standardized data sharing where each actor retains control over their data but can contribute to common benefits. In this way, water and wastewater data can be combined with, for example, climate data for better decision-making, more efficient operation, reduced leakage and strengthened climate adaptation. The project is based on cases in Gothenburg and Tjörn and connects water and wastewater organizations, municipalities, suppliers, research actors and authorities. Intraservice and Kretslopp och Vatten in Gothenburg are central need owners that combine technical infrastructure, political support and operational needs, complemented by smaller municipalities and national actors such as SMHI and Sambruk. By addressing technical, organizational, legal and business aspects, SVADA creates a robust model for collaboration and innovation. The goal is to establish a national data space that makes the water and wastewater sector a pioneer in Europe’s work for sustainable water and contributes directly to the Sustainable Water for All 2050 mission.
