Purpose and objectives

The aim of the project is to explore the possibilities of reusing treated wastewater in the Stockholm region to support circular water management. The aim is to identify suitable uses for technical water, legal barriers and create networks and collaboration between relevant actors, such as municipalities and industries. Through case studies at three large wastewater treatment plants, the project aims to pave the way for sustainable, economically beneficial water reuse in the region.

Expected impacts and results

Expected outcomes include concrete plans for reuse of treated wastewater in the Stockholm region, identification of legal and technical barriers, and development of networks for long-term collaboration. Impacts include increased resource efficiency and reduced water scarcity through circular solutions. The project will create references and inspire other municipalities to integrate sustainable water reuse.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is being carried out in four work packages: mapping of areas of use, technical prerequisites, legal and economic barriers, and development of a plan for practical implementation. Through case studies at three wastewater treatment plants, challenges and solutions for water reuse are identified. The project involves workshops, interviews and collaboration between municipal water and wastewater actors, authorities and industries to create a sustainable model for water management.
