About the Project
The “New chemical practice 2.0” project addresses the growing risks associated with unwanted chemicals in water, particularly organic micro pollutants, which threaten both the environment and public health. The goal is to develop and implement a new national practice for risk assessment and early management of chemicals in water, thereby laying the groundwork for a national coordinating function. This national function is a permanent, nationally coordinated expert resource designed to bridge existing and future organizations and working methods. It will provide guidance, tools, and support for risk assessment and management of chemicals in water, and serve as a knowledge hub between research, policy, and practice within drinking water, wastewater, and environmental protection.
Through a transition lab, stakeholders from the water sector, academia, government agencies, and industry will gather to develop new methods, digital tools, and harmonized guidelines concerning chemical risks in water, as well as promoting national and international collaboration and dissemination. The project initially focuses on two case studies: Lake Mälaren as a drinking water source and recipient, and Himmerfjärden wastewater treatment plant with a focus on reusing purified water. Methods and tools will be tested, integrated, and scaled up, with particular emphasis on analysis methods, data management, and risk assessment. The transition lab will also develop economic and governance models, as well as strategies for broad societal acceptance, implementation, and legislation.
