Program Manager

Magnus Arnell is a researcher at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and Lund University, and is the Program Director of Water Wise Societies. In this role, Magnus has a broad understanding of systemic challenges related to water and a strong interest in available solutions and innovations. His research area includes sustainability, circular processes and resource efficiency in wastewater systems. His work focuses on sustainability analysis and integrated assessment. Magnus also holds an MSc in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Industrial Automation.

Anna Maria Sundin

Deputy Program Manager

Anna Maria Sundin is Deputy Program Manager in Water Wise Societies and also works as a project manager at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. She has more than 20 years of experience working with wastewater management and water in various roles within municipalities, authorities and research institutes. In addition to Water Wise Societies and sustainable water systems, she works with resource-efficient wastewater management and climate-neutral water and wastewater. Anna Maria has a Master of Science in Environmental and Water Engineering from Uppsala University of Technology and has built on her technical skills and worked with leadership, strategic work and at the authority, which has provided important lessons and perspectives.

Program Coordinator

As Program Coordinator, Elin Flodin is involved in large parts of the Water Wise Societies palette. The core of her work is to be the link between the members and the rest of the program office. The focus is also on the coordination within the program office and the development of our upcoming calls and activities. In addition to her role as program coordinator in Water Wise Societies, Elin is a project manager at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden where she works broadly with water issues, for example linked to nutrient recycling, asset management and antibiotic resistance. She holds a Master of Science in Environmental and Water Engineering from Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Fredric Norefjäll combines extensive experience with a strong drive for sustainable transformation. As a Senior Innovation Leader and Process Manager at RISE, he designs and leads processes that enable stakeholders to solve complex societal challenges together.

Fredric has over 25 years of experience working with sustainable transitions, combining a multidisciplinary perspective with the ability to design and lead change processes that foster collaboration. With a background as both a lawyer and an economist, he helps organizations navigate complex issues. Currently, he leads the transformation management work package within Water Wise Societies. In this role, he supports stakeholders in finding new ways forward through structured experimentation and collective learning. Fredric’s focus is on delivering concrete results and building a resilient innovation ecosystem

Karina Barquet

Research work package leader

Karina Barquet is a Senior Researcher and Team Leader for Water, Coasts & Ocean at SEI Headquarters. She holds a PhD in Human Geography and has more than ten years of experience in applied research and project management at the intersection of environmental governance, risk management and resilience of critical water infrastructure – from inland to coastal and ocean, in Sweden and internationally. Within Water Wise Societies, she leads research efforts, compiling and analyzing existing evidence to identify priority knowledge gaps and design impact-oriented interventions.

Johan Strandberg

Innovation work package leader

Johan Strandberg is a researcher in water and environmental technology at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. During his time at IVL, he has worked with start-ups, innovation companies and export promotion in several projects, including Smart City Sweden. Johan also works with the mapping and management of water pollution, especially in the event of major acute discharges where he supports the Emergency Services with assessments. In addition, he works with drinking water issues and has, among other things, assignments for WHO.

Staffan Filipsson

Work Package Leader Capacity Development

Staffan Filipsson is the work package leader for capacity development at Water Wise Societies and also works as an Innovation Developer at Swedish Water. Already during his time in chemistry, Staffan focused on water areas and he is constantly working to ensure that new technologies are used where it makes sense.

He previously worked at IVL developing treatment technologies for industrial process water and municipal wastewater. All this has resulted in a series of pilot trials and demonstration projects, including a full-scale pharmaceutical wastewater treatment and recycling plant, and a beer brewed from treated wastewater that was sold at Systembolaget.

Work Package Leader Policy Development and Governance

Pyry Niemi is Public Affairs Manager at Swedish Water. Previously, he has been a Member of Parliament and, among other things, Chairman of the Parliamentary EU Committee, Chairman of the Nordic Council Committee for Growth and Development, and President of the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC). Pyry has worked for many years in the business world as a CEO, sales manager and more. He is currently chairman of the Nordic Association Sweden. He has a Master of Social Science in Cultural Geography/Demography and a Bachelor of Science in Social Planning.

Gina Aspelin Hedbring

Internationalization Work Package Leader

With a solid background in international business development and innovation, Gina is responsible for Internationalization for the program. Areas of responsibility include international networks and relationships to promote transition in Sweden but also to create conditions for Swedish companies with an interest in international business development.

At IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, she is responsible for international projects, which is a group consisting of about 10 people. Previously, she has been responsible for the government assignment Smart City Sweden and receives several delegations annually on the theme of water.

In addition to her formal duties, Gina is involved in water issues at the local level where she is involved in a lake management association.
