Linked to mission: Sustainable water withdrawals, reducing water use and leakage, building and managing society in harmony with water

Purpose and objectives

The project aims to address challenges related to water scarcity in Swedish municipalities, especially in areas with sensitive water sources. The project will develop and test innovative, research-based methods that lead to behavioral change, acceptance and engagement of users. The overall goal is to reduce water consumption in areas with seasonal variations and sensitive water resources.

Expected impacts and results

Practically tested methods to influence water use in areas with sensitive water resources. Concrete actions based on behavioral drivers and barriers of different target groups. A plan for how the methods can be used by the participating water organizations and how this can be disseminated to others.

The project addresses the need for a societal shift in water use. To get there, communication is not enough, behavior change, acceptance and local participation are also needed.

Planned approach and implementation

The 12-month project is divided into four work packages. The first is knowledge building and methodology development. The second and largest work package is testing. The third is evaluation and plan for scaling up. The last one is project management and communication.

To create acceptance and behavioral change, the COM-B model, co-creative dialogue and citizen science are used. Technology used is smart water meters for digital feedback.
