About the project

The ‘Water in balance’ project addresses the need for a resilient and sustainable water supply in the light of climate change affecting both water availability and quality. By developing the concept of a “water budget” – a model for balancing the supply and withdrawal of water, taking into account both human and ecological needs – the conditions for a fair and sustainable water allocation are created.

The project establishes a thematic transition lab focusing on water resources information management, initially in Skåne and the Gothenburg region. The aim is to collect, structure and make available data on water resources, while protecting sensitive information. By coordinating calculation models and transparency in methods, a robust basis for decision-making and planning of water issues is created.

At the end of the project, there will be a clear division of responsibilities for data and information management, and a plan to fill knowledge gaps. The project involves stakeholders from regional authorities, municipalities, research institutes and national organizations, and lays the foundation for further studies and policy development for sustainable water management – both in normal and crisis situations.
