Purpose and goal

The aim of this project is to investigate how we can reduce the sources of pollution that are transported from our cities by stormwater. Specific objective include to: i) analyze the challenge and how it can contribute to achieving Prosperous Lakes and Watercourses 2035 ii) identify the desired future state and which system changes and stakeholders that are needed to get there iii) develop proposals for next steps (activities, need for solutions) to get closer to the goal.

Expected effects and result

Stormwater is an important vector for pollutants from the urban environment to receiving water bodies. Identification and subsequent elimination of the sources of these pollutants are therefore a prerequisite to reach the goal “Well-being lakes and watercourses 2035”. Furthermore, this project creates conditions for a clean stormwater that has great potential for reuse as an alternative water source and water resource.

Planned approach and implementation

Project participants are Luleå University of Technology (LTU), the City of Stockholm, Stormtac, MSVA, BVB and the Swedish Transport Administration. The project is based on a workshop series that includes an analysis of how to minimize the occurrence of micropollutants that are spread by stormwater, a future vision and necessary system changes, as well as suggestions for the next steps to get there. The outcomes are summarised in a report with a further in-depth international outlook.
